Item Description:
Up for sale at OldsObsolete is an incredibly rare, pristine piece of factory Chevrolet muscle car history. This is a genuine New Old Stock (NOS) box of 8 factory GM mechanical solid valve tappets, originally packaged under early production GM Part # 5232215 (Group 0.459). This box represents the definitive, correct factory component for the absolute golden era of the mechanical-cammed, high-output 409 engine before it was phased out in mid-1965.
Unlike standard small-block or later big-block lifters, these true “W-block” tappets feature the distinct 3/16″ lower oiling groove situated just above the bottom face. This groove is absolutely mandatory to align with the unique low-cut oil galleries of a genuine 348/409 block. Running a standard Chevy lifter in a 409 block will entirely block valvetrain lubrication—these original GM units guarantee correct factory oil flow.
True Vintage High-Performance Construction:
Sourced directly from an era when GM catalogs formally designated these parts as “Tappet, Valve” rather than lifters, these units feature the legendary early-generation “pushed-in cup” design. Below the heavy, thick, copper-plated pushrod seat, the body is completely solid machined steel. It was engineered strictly to take the un-cushioned mechanical pounding of a factory high-lift solid camshaft spinning past 6,000 RPM. A wire snap-ring/spring keeper retains the heavy-duty cup, while a single oil hole delivers precision-metered “edge-orifice” oiling up through the pushrod to keep the upper valvetrain lubricated without flooding the cylinder heads.
Condition Notes:
Brand new, uninstalled, pristine original factory inventory with the original copper-plating intact on the pushrod seats. The original GM box is included, showing beautiful, authentic vintage shelf-wear that displays phenomenally well in a collection or specialized parts storefront.
Because this early 5232215 part number was superseded by GM in October 1965 to a generic service replacement number (5232439), this box is a rare, true production-era survivor from the years these cars were actively rolling off the assembly line. Perfect for a numbers-matching concours restoration on an iconic ’63, ’64, or ’65 409 build.
